Start

After gathering, the route will begin and we will immediately head to the Cenobio one of the most important monasteries of Greek monasticism in Southern Italy and from there we will head to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Pietrasanta for a journey time of about 50 minutes, from which we will be able to admire a splendid view at the price of a not too strenuous climb. From here we will enjoy a regenerating aperitif at Ciolandrea, a natural terrace that will once again allow us to admire the beauty of the Gulf of Policastro.

Pranzo

Aperitif at Ciolandrea, Cilento’s natural terrace. We proceed to Bosco where we will have lunch at the “U Trappitu” restaurant..

The itinerary resumes from the small square named after the martyrs of the Cilento uprisings of 1828. Here a large ceramic mural, a 1980 work by José Ortega, commemorates the sad epilogue of the revolt that ended with the burning of the small Cilento village. After a regenerating drink at the Sambuco spring, coming from Mount Bulgheria, we move toward the center. Going up via Provinciale, we take the second side street on the right. Passing by the old washhouse, we come to Via Lavinaio where we find the chapel of Santa Maria del Carmine. Built in 1648 by Pompeo Ursaia (son of Domenico professor of canon law at the University of the Holy See), it is now owned by the municipality.

Pomeriggio

Continuing downhill, having arrived at the crossroads with Via Porta della terra, turn left to reach Piazza S. Rosalia in the center of which is located the chapel of the same name erected in the second half of the 17th century out of devotion to the saint after the plague epidemic that caused 200 deaths in Bosco. Since 2009 it has passed into the ownership of the municipality. Of particular note is the majolica floor that surrounds a noble coat of arms. Near the small square, where there is a fine stone portal surmounted by a white marble coat of arms and protected by a portico with a pointed arch, we find the “Casa Ortega” museum. The 19th-century building, until the 1960s the home of the elementary school, since March 2011 has housed a permanent exhibition of papier-mâché works by Spanish painter and former student of Picasso, José Ortega (Arroba de los Montes – Mancha, 1921 – Paris, 1990). Forced into exile since 1960 because he was in contact with anti-Franco revolutionaries, he moved first to Paris, then to Italy, particularly to Matera (PZ) and Bosco. In the small Cilento village he spent his last 20 years before dying in Paris. We continue toward Via S. Nicola, which we follow in an easterly direction. Passing the chapel of Saints Peter and Paul erected in 1691, we reach the home of the “pintor” of La Mancha. Return.
